Why Neutral Colors Are a Beautiful Choice for Newborn Photography (But Not Your Only Option)

When planning your newborn session, one of the most common questions I get asked is: “What colors should we use?”

The truth is—there’s no one “right” answer. Every session is styled with your preferences in mind. That said, neutral tones are always a beautiful and popular choice for newborn photography, and there are a few reasons why they photograph so well.

Neutrals Keep the Focus on Your Baby

Soft tones like gray, cream, beige, and white create a clean, simple look. These colors don’t compete for attention, which means your baby’s tiny features, expressions, and details really stand out in every image.

They Create a Soft, Timeless Look

Neutral setups tend to have a calm, natural feel. Years from now, these images will still look just as beautiful and won’t feel tied to a specific trend or color phase.

They Complement Baby’s Skin Tones

One thing many parents don’t realize is how much color can affect the way skin tones photograph. Soft neutrals are very flattering and can help avoid unwanted color casts on baby’s skin. For example, lighter tones like gray can be especially helpful for babies who may still have a bit of newborn redness or jaundice, helping create a more even, natural look in photos.

Simple Doesn’t Mean Boring

Even within a neutral palette, there is so much variety. Different textures, layers, wraps, and subtle tones can create depth and interest while still keeping that soft, clean style.

But Color Is Always Welcome

While I love working with neutrals, they are absolutely not your only option. If you’re drawn to soft blues, dusty pinks, earthy tones, or even something bolder or more themed, we can absolutely incorporate that into your session.

Every family has their own style, and your session should reflect that. My goal is to create images you love—whether that’s light and neutral, soft and colorful, or a mix of both.

Styling Your Session

When you book your newborn session, I’ll help guide you through color choices and styling so everything comes together beautifully. I provide a variety of wraps, outfits, and props in both neutral and color options, making the process simple and stress-free for you.
