Studio or Outdoor? Which Maternity Photography Session is Right for You in Victoria,Texas?

Updated: Jan 2

At Michelle Pena Photography, I offer studio and outdoor maternity sessions for expecting mothers. But how do you decide which one is right for you? First, there's no wrong answer. Most of this decision comes down to personal preference. That said, here are some similarities and differences between outdoor and in-studio maternity sessions to give you a feel for what you can expect from each one.

Similarities Between a Studio and Outdoor Maternity Photography Session

Access to the Client Closet

All of my beautiful mothers-to-be have access to my client closet. I provide gorgeous maternity gowns in all different sizes, styles, and colors. Plus, headpieces to take your outfit to the next level.

Posing

The same types of poses that can be done in a studio can generally be done outside too. So if you have a pose you're in love with, chances are you won't have to give it up just because we're working in a different location.

Scheduling

Regardless of where your maternity session will take place, you’ll want to schedule early. I like to shoot pregnancy pictures around 32 weeks, while your belly is nice and round, but you still feel comfortable enough for portraits.

Differences Between Outdoor and Studio Maternity Photos

Style

While my general style remains consistent, outdoor photos have a more natural vibe and are usually warmer, while studio maternity pictures tend to have a greater balance of light and dark shades. (Much of that depends on you: your studio pictures can look brighter or more muted depending on the colors you choose and the mood you're going for.)

Setting

Obviously, the setting and backdrop will have a very different feel depending on whether we're indoors or outdoors. But the location also comes into play for practical reasons. If you have small children that you want to include, I usually recommend an outdoor setting since young kiddos almost always love being outside!

My Personal Fave?

I love shooting both in my Victoria, Texas, photography studio and out of it. If you're wondering what my personal preference is, honestly, I'd have to say outdoor. It's just so beautiful and refreshing! I have a few locations I love to use, but I'm also open to client-chosen areas within a few miles of the city.
