One of the most heart-melting parts of a newborn session is capturing the bond between your brand-new baby and their older sibling. Whether they’re a curious toddler or a proud big kid, those first photos together are something you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
As a Victoria, Texas, newborn photographer, I understand that while sibling images can be stunning, they also require extra care, patience, and creativity. Here’s how I approach these special moments—and how we keep everyone safe and happy in the process.
A Gentle, Child-Led Approach
Not all big brothers or sisters are immediately ready to snuggle up with a newborn—and that’s okay! I never force sibling poses. Instead, I gently guide the session based on the sibling’s comfort level. If they’re nervous or unsure, we start slow. Sometimes, sitting near the baby is all they need at first to build confidence.
Toddlers especially need room to warm up, so I make sure to keep things light, fun, and pressure-free. Many times, I’ll use soft encouragement, toys, or even a little sibling-only photo time to get them engaged before we bring baby in.
Posing with Safety in Mind - Victoria, Texas Newborn Photographer
Safety is always the top priority. Some sibling poses are done with compositing techniques—that means I’ll photograph the baby and the sibling separately, then merge the images in post-production. This is especially helpful when working with young children who may not be able to hold or lie next to the newborn safely.
When siblings are ready for direct contact, I use props like a small bed, a soft fur rug, or a swaddle wrap to make sure the baby is secure. I’m always close by (sometimes with a parent’s helping hand nearby), and I never place a newborn in a pose that isn’t 100% supported.
Making It Memorable for Everyone
For many families, these sibling shots are the ones they hang on the wall or send to grandparents. To make the experience extra special, I work to create a fun and relaxed atmosphere for everyone. I’ll often let the big sibling pick a headband or wrap color or help me “pose” the baby. Giving them a little role in the session helps them feel included and proud.
And don’t worry if things don’t go exactly as planned—some of the most genuine storytelling images come from unposed moments of interaction: a sweet glance, a giggle, a curious hand reaching out.
What to Wear and How to Prepare
To help the session go smoothly, I recommend neutral, soft-colored outfits for siblings—nothing too bold or distracting. If they’re old enough, explain what the session is ahead of time and let them know they’re going to help make memories with their new baby.
Feel free to bring a favorite toy or comfort item. Sometimes, a familiar object can be just the thing to help a little one feel at ease in the studio.
